A navigation system for surgeons

We got to know the founding team of Scopis even before the company was founded as part of the EXIST programme of the BMWi, when they developed their navigation system at the Charitè. Surgeons working on endoscopic operations in the ENT field often work under challenging conditions with a limited field of vision. Therefore they use a highly precise and reliable navigation system to perform their interventions based on the anatomy of the patient. Scopis develops, manufactures and distributes surgical navigation systems that use optical and electromagnetic tracking devices to provide sub-millimetre-precise position information and allow the surgeon to perform the operation supported by his own planning data.

When the first product generation was successfully launched on the market, we were again approached by the Scopis team at MEDICA. The development of the dual tracking system and planning software required additional equity capital. As we were convinced by the concept, we then structured a financing round together with our co-investor Extorel, the family office of the Strascheg family, and have been supporting the company in its international expansion with our know-how and network ever since.

The market for surgical navigation and surgical support technology is experiencing continuous growth, driven by new application areas and advances in robot technology.Parallel to the approval of the first product by the US FDA, a sales cooperation with the US medical technology company Stryker Corp was negotiated. At that time, Stryker was very interested in completing its ENT product family. These talks ended in 2017 with the takeover of Scopis by Stryker Corp. which now continues the success story of Scopis with the possibilities of an internationally excellently positioned company.
